IIT and DPS

This post concerns India and all Indians.

The news items on 15th Dec 2004 by many leading Indian media like the Times of India, Rediff, NDTV and probably many other newspapers/newsportals have shocked me like anything. I have seen the shallowness of my country's media before too, but this incident probably made me understand better that how an irresponsible media can be extremely harmful for the country. Let me show you how, but please read atleast one of the reports I mentioned above first. The reports were top headlines for half of the day on atleast two of these newsportals.

A few weeks back some guy and girl from a reputed Delhi school had sex and the guy videotaped it using his cellphone. He then MMSed the video to many of his friends and soon the video was spreading in the whole nation. The alleged couple was suspended from the school following media reports about the video. Surprisingly both the guy and girl's names were not published anywhere in the media! I thought the media sure shows some sense now and then.

Then the before-mentioned reports came wherein an IIT guy tried to sell that video on the internet and got arrested by the police. The police took the pains to trace the email ID and went to the banks to trace money transfers etc to finally nail down the culprit. The problem with this whole episode is that the student's name was published by all the newsportals! Some of them even published the place he lives and his fathers occupation to make sure that his career and future is in shambles for a long long time. Some concerns:

1. My question is : when this guy got already arrested by the police and suspended by the IIT, then why did the media publish his name and whereabouts (even his address!) to further ruin his future? This is a normal Indian student for God's sake, not a criminal!!! This is exactly how criminals are born ! By giving him punishment and also making sure he lives his life as hell for the rest of future! I think this was all due to pressure from the powerful families in delhi. Notice something here, none of us know the real name (forget about the address) of the guy and the girl involved in the incident. Why? Probably coz the guy's family has a flourishing diamond business and girl's dad was a senior army brigadier while the IIT student's dad is a normal government employee.

2. Second Concern: why is only this guy arrested, when everyone knew that Delhi's palika bazar was a hot spot to get the video in Rs 40 ? I can only guess that making a IIT student get arrested and having such headlines would scare the others who would have otherwise forwarded this clip. Now they won't forward it. I might be speaking out of emotions here but I cannot see any other reason. Oh and by the way I dont know this guy personally neither do I have any sympathy towards him. But the question still remains... why only him?

3. Most important concern: Why is the "source" of this video roaming around free? The guy who actually made the "porn" video and forwarded it to his friends is the biggest culprit. So why is the police not arresting him and his friends who forwarded it further? He must have also violated the Indian Penal Code x,y,z. I dont see the difference. Can someone enlighten me please?

4. Media: I dont see this as a "headline" news, forget about being the top news for the day! Why is the media being too shallow and irresponsible? Why do they have to publish any scandal/incident concerning IITs in Big Bold Letters? If this was a patriotic national media then I am sure they would have NOT published the news at all to avoid defamation of the internationally acclaimed institutes which are the pride of the nation. But no, they want spicy news!! F***ing irresponsible subservient Indian media!! :x :x

The whole incident draws an analogy to the usual murder cases in India. The person who actually did the murder gets caught and jailed, but the high-commands who actually give out the murder orders or suparis usually remian untouched.

Damn Indian media and damn Indian Police!!

I am very very upset......

I was thinking on the same terms.. this guy got caught because he did this through the 'proper' channels, i.e. he has reciepts of transactions and had demand drafts and all. There were so many reports that this video was available on VCDs in Delhi and other places!! Guess it makes a hot masala news to combine IIT and sex, particularly on web editions of the papers.

Well what can you say... Its the media after all.
But at least now it makes the IIT group of colleges more famous or should I say infamous......

1. The guy's and gal's name is not published since they are minors. The idiot from IIT's name is published since he is 23.

2. Why should the media be concerned about his career? Hell why should anyone be conerned about his career?

3. People in palika are not being arrested because they pay their weekly hafta to the local police. Mr Ravi Raj on embarking on a career of peddling smut should also have done so.

4. As for scaring anybody into not forwarding this clip that is far fetched. Unless you sell it, send it to children or if the video contained children it is not a crime. Selling it should not be a crime to obut what can you do about puritan Indian law?

5. I don't think the guy in the video broke any laws in filming the infamous incident. The whole act was consensual, the filming was consensual and both were minors. I don't think the Indian Penal code has any privacy laws. There is no reason why he should he not roam around free. The guy has a future in the porn industry.

6. Hey the news media wants to make money and they make money by selling sensationalist news. This was sensational and I bet this article was eyeballed many times over (first time I went to rediff in over 3-4 months). Nothing wrong with the media wanting to make money.

7. And why publish news about IIT in big bold letters? Because we are big!! People are interested in us, in what we do. Same reason why you have tabloids and mags like People, Us, Filmfare etc..

8. By the way it is not the job of the media to be patriotic. The media's job is to provide information whether it be good bad or ugly.

9. Stop generalising!! Women are raped daily all over the world, does that mean all men are rapists? Do you think the IIT name is sullied? Hell no. Parents will still send their kids to IITs, people would spend two years of their lives mugging their ass off to sleep in the same rooms where we slept (if not more, assuming they don't screw up the first time) and compnaies will still recruit from IITs.The IITs are still the best at what they do and idiots like Ravi Raj will not be able to change that.

10. Just because the guy and the girl haven't been arrested doesn't mean nobody else should be arrested. Ravi Raj broke the law (I do think the law is an ass).

11. I am happy at what he got. The guy probably got the clip for free and he is trying to make money out of it. Really petty (not to speak of intellectual property infringement). Serves him right. What you get for free, you should share for free.

Hi,
partially agree.Certainly that guy deserves to be punished. But in general it is good to keep the name of such crimianls anonymous. For these ppl. may like to turn a new leaf over after some time. But actually when he wants to,he won't be able ot because of the publicity by the media.
I too was quite surprised & shocked by the police maintaining anonymity about the minors who had sex and their other details.

And u'r quite unjustified in expecting our media to care for nation,if they were so we would not see stupid political stories on the headlines, but stories of inspirarion and great deeds o'er there..

Good one by anonymous Lallu an's 11 point something :)
I was about to post some out of these 11 when i bumped into them , so i must try to fill in the gaps.

Points 1 & 2 spot free , passed .
Points 3 , 6 , 8hey man !! , Mr. Lallu has just given out the facts which the whole nation is aware of, whereby the important point is that why we bear the brunt of this irresponsible, unaccountable and selfish media and the corrupt police.

Actually,Also that self-thought money making genious, entrepreneur at a very young age ravi raj was arrested because he forced the spotlight towards him, by going the internet way and that also through a very popular indian portal. haha !

Palika bazaar is a daily affair and a localised one, does not concern much to rest of india.
That is settled between the big guns there itlself mutually.

And yes, P1 : Leave the names, why werent the couple arrested at that time.

For rest of the things we will dive a lil into IPC and find out.

Aaj ke liye bas itna hi .. phir haazir honge isi din isi samay, agle hafte..

RP made IIT Kharagpur's MRP (Tv's TRP) ratings high...

I think the problems is with the Indian mentality. They are really frustrated people who just wanted to have sex or see or to read about it. Media is corrupt there is now way they could be handled but tell me who makes the media u and me right, that is we fucking Indians. Who have to survive anyhow in this competitive world.

Now the thing that I hate most is why the fuck these so called porn movie star kids are not arrested. And I truely agree with ur ritesh that they should be arrested or the otherwise Raj should be bailed. Its really unfair to keep that guy in Jail and living these porn movie star kids out so that they can make a brand new movie again.

So dear its only we young people who can change India. Try to make India a safe place for girls, women and kids.
